What on earth happened?!
One minute we were rugging up against the cold, the next we are grabbing for iced drinks and the air con! Wowsers! A lot can change in a short amount of time, that’s for sure. One exciting change that we have seen is the movement of Local Sunday’s from being a concept to a reality!
Sunday 26th November from 4-6pm, a whole range of people congregated at Murrumbeena Bowls – The Green for a gathering of music, dancing, cool drinks from the bar and some neighbourhood fun. While bowling is not the focus for these events, the sun was out and so some folk put a bowl down in the afternoon sunshine. The children couldn’t decide which was more fun – running around barefoot on the green or dancing to the amazing, sparkling and fun Brooklyn’s Finest! Michael was at the BBQ cooking up some sausages, Alan and Marilla were behind the bar, Murray was helping those on the green, I was at the door and everyone was having fun. The morning looked soooooo bleak and the forecast was dismal. Somehow, by 3pm the sun had come out and stayed out the whole time. A big thanks to the Local Sunday’s committee (Murray, Michael, Marilla, Sehan, Daniel, Brooke, Christine – and I’ll thank myself too) who planned and ran the whole thing!
When will there be another one? Sunday 28th January from 4pm–6pm. Come along! It will be really fun dancing to The Sullivan Trio. If you know of any local bands that play danceable, family friendly disco/funk/jazz/soul/latin grooves, then please get in touch 0401 385 416.
See Local Sunday’s Event for more details.
There is also a fun tribe of locals who are wanting to jazz the local Village up for Christmas. Let’s not rely on Council to do it for us, lets pull up our sleeves and make some decorations that remind us that it is a time of celebration, rest, renewal and reflection.
Speaking of reflection, I had given up on creating New Year’s resolutions for myself – but this year might be a different one. I think that my resolution will be … wait! If I tell you will it come true?.. Oh that’s wishing on a star… my resolution will be making sure that I am invested in this GREAT community.
You can influence how this suburb looks too! It was so great to see so many people at the Murrumbeena Village council consultation, but you don’t need to wait for one of those to have some influence. I encourage all of you to head down to the LXRA office in Murrumbeena to check out the ‘Under the Skyrail’ plans and have your say. You might think that you can’t make a difference, but I beg to differ. There needs to be lots of drops of water in a bucket to fill it up – not that I’m calling you a drip!
Contact council and tell them what you’d like to see in the place where Billy Motors used to be. And how about that unused Police Station? What could that be used for given that its functionality depends on which political party is in or not.
What I love about Murrumbeena, is that it’s a small suburb. What I also love about it is that there is soooo much great potential here! There is so much we can do for each other. What about a veggie swap for all that Summer produce? A tomato chutney making day? A Community picnic? What about a local buy, swap and sell? There are so many things that we as individuals can start up! The most exciting thing (according to Systems Dynamics) is that if you’ve thought of it, chances are someone else has too!
SO put your idea out there on the Murrumbeena Village Facebook page and see who comes to the party!
